You want to lose weight, and someone told you to download an app and log every gram. You tried it for three days. Now you want to know how to lose weight without counting calories. You can. Here is how I coach food.
Start with habits you can see on the plate
I start with habits, because a habit shows up on the plate. These are the ones I give first:
- Protein at each meal: eggs, fish, chicken, tuna, tokwa.
- A vegetable at lunch and at dinner.
- A glass of water when you wake up, and one with each meal.
- Stop eating when you're full, and keep the rest for tomorrow's baon.
- Pack your lunch two days a week.
Pick one. Keep it for two weeks. When it feels normal, add the next. You'll see the change in your photos, and you won't need a food scale to see it.
Lose weight without counting calories: the photo log
My clients log their meals in the app: a photo, a few words, the time. "Two boiled eggs, wheat bread, black coffee." That's the whole entry. It takes a few seconds.

I read the log and reply on the meals. I look for the pattern across the week: breakfast skipped three days in a row, dinner at ten at night, a baon that holds the week together. Then we pick the next habit from what the photos show.

When counting helps
Counting is a tool. It's useful for a short stretch when:
- Your weight has stayed flat for weeks, and the photos don't show why.
- You want to learn what your usual portions look like.
- You enjoy the numbers, and they keep you going.
If we count, we count for a week or two, learn what we need, and go back to photos.
When to stop logging
If logging food makes you anxious or guilty, or you skip dinner with friends because you can't log it, stop and tell me. We'll pick a different thing to track. If worry about food keeps coming back, talk to a doctor.
And if the log goes quiet for a week, that's fine. Here's what to do when you fall off the plan.
Common questions
- Do I need a food scale?
- No. A photo and a few words are enough for me to coach from.
- Should I log snacks and drinks?
- Yes. A merienda or a milk tea is part of the day. Logging it shows me the whole day, and nothing in the log gets judged.
- What if I miss a few days of logging?
- Send the next photo. We pick up from there. A gap in the log tells me something about your week, and that's useful too.
- What if my doctor gave me a food plan?
- Follow your doctor's plan. Log your meals so I can see your week, and I build your training around what you're cleared to do.
What to do this week
- Take a photo of each meal and snack for seven days.
- On Sunday, look at them side by side. Which meals have protein? Which have a vegetable?
- Pick one habit from the list above, and start it on Monday.

Want someone to read your meal log?
That's what I do. You log your meals in the app, I reply on them, and we pick your next habit together. I build your program and adjust it as you go. Coaching from Javier, ₱1,200 a month.
